This weekend the first round of the 2017 CAMS Australian GT Championship was hosted at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. The 26 car field included 7 Reiter Gallardo R-EX’s eager to start the season on the top of the board to secure valuable championship points... and they did!
The Reiter Engineering customer teams impressed throughout the race weekend stringing together a number of impressive results including a victory and 4 podium finishes.
Starting with race 1 on Friday, Lago Racing put on a great performance as driver Roger Lago chased down leader Bates but fell just too short at the finish line and had to settle for the second step of the podium. Not far behind was the Reiter Gallardo R-EX of PM Motorsport with driver Peter Major securing 3rd place for race 1.
Race two saw yet another epic battle between the Lago Racing R-EX and the PM Motorsport R-EX. Lago had the upper-hand for several laps pushing hard to keep Major behind. Hoping to take the lead Major watched Lago for several laps to find his best opportunity which came at turn 9 where he had a huge dive into the corner to seal his lead. The two had a 1-2 finish after a tough fight which kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. A few positions back was the Reiter Gallardo R-EX of Tim Miles who rounded up the top 5.
In Race 3, Roger Lago managed to grow himself a healthy lead which at the time seemed would be enough for him to secure the victory but after a safety car interval the cars were bunched up again putting Bates close enough to make a move on Lago, which he did! Nevertheless Lago continued to push with hopes of retrieving the lead of the race. Once again the chequered flag was out a little too early for that to happen. The pair had a photo finish as they crossed the finish line with a 0.140 time difference. Peter Major finished close behind in 4th place and the Gallardo R-EX of Michel Hovey and Daniel Jilesen finished 7th.
A strong performance by several Reiter Gallardo R-EXs.. Congratulations to all the teams!
