Roger Lago and David Russell win dramatic CAMS Australian GT Endurance race at Hampton Downs with JBS Australia Gallardo R-EX. The third round of the CAMS Australian GT Endurance Championship showed racing at its best. 101 exciting laps in a dramatic 2-hour race at the rebuild Hampton Downs circuit in New Zealand.
Reiter Engineering customer JBS Australia already took the Pole Position in the Top 10 shootout thanks to a fast lap of David Russell with the #23 Gallardo R-EX. Russell should also be the starting driver and kept the lead right from the start. He opened a small gap immediately and defend P1 for the first 20 laps. As the pit window for the first mandatory stop started after 30 minutes, Russell went straight into the pits to hand over the Gallardo R-EX to car owner Roger Lago for the middle stint. Refuelling and tyre change went well and Lago rejoined the race in 14th position and was caught by the first safety car period of the race. But he stepped up fast in the classification after all competitors also had done their first stops and was shown in third position in the standings in lap 37. The restart after a second safety car period cost some positions in the first lap, but Lago fought back soon to P3. A slight contact in lap 50 brought some trouble for the JBS Australia crew with a drive through for sending a competitor into a spin and dropped the Gallardo R-EX down to 7th place. Lago and Russell stayed in 7th position also after the driver change in lap 69 for a while, but then David Russell started to work his way up in the classification. With 20 laps to go the JBS Australia Gallardo R-EX was shown in second position after a series of fast laps done by Russell. The fourth safety car of the race closed the gap to the leader to nearly zero. As the lights went green again, Russell started to hunt the leading car for the remaining seven laps. With a brave move in lap 98, David Russell went into the lead and defend P1 with a solid drive until the end of the Hampton Downs 101! 4 seconds ahead of the second placed competitor, Roger Lago and David Russell won the third round of the CAMS Australian GT Endurance Championship and took the first win for the Gallardo R-EX in this Championship in 2016!
